They are the other intelligent life on this planet. I think there's a recognition between us and them.

Did you ever get to the bottom of why that is? You said there's a link between humans and dolphins. They're able to grasp abstract concepts very quickly. One of my favourite facts about dolphins is they understand syntax, they understand certain aspects of grammar. They're very social creatures, probably more social than we are. They're processing emotion with great sophistication most likely. They developed them about 35 million years ago, which is about 34.8 million years earlier than we developed our own big brains. One thing I like to talk about is their brains. I know you spent a lot of time with scientists who observe dolphins in the wild. In a conversation with Daybreak Kamloops host Shelley Joyce, Casey expands on some of her exploration of that question. "The book is really my attempt to follow the thread of this question and answer it: What is it about dolphins that compels us so much and seems to make us happy?" she said.

  • "I had tried everything, but it really was this encounter with dolphins that seemed to make me happier." "There was just something unique about the dolphins and the time I spent with them," Casey said. On a trip to Maui, Casey went for a swim, and encountered a pod of spinner dolphins. In her new book, Voices in the Ocean, Canadian author Susan Casey seeks to better understand our relationship with dolphins: why we find them so mysterious, why we feel a connection to them and why we often mistreat them.Ĭasey began this journey as one of healing, when she was dealing with the grief of her father's death.
